Patrick Couper

Patrick Couper

Patrick began at the Queensland Museum in 1984. He was initially employed in display construction and moved to the Herpetology Section in 1986 when a research assistant position became available.

He is now Curator of Reptiles and Amphibians and has an active research interest in the taxonomy, ecology, biogeography and conservation of Queensland’s diverse reptile fauna.

Patrick has described 47 new species of reptiles and these descriptions also include six new genera. A major research focus has been the leaf-tailed geckos that inhabit rainforest and rock habitats in eastern Queensland and New South Wales. He is particularly interested in the role of rocky landscapes (lithorefugia) in allowing rainforest lineages (both vertebrates and invertebrates) to persist in areas where rainforests no longer occur.
